CSX - How tomorrow moves

CSX Trains move a ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel.

At CSX, we are dedicated to doing what we can to help protect the environment for tomorrow, and we want to empower individuals to do the same. We have compiled a short list of tips that are easy to implement but can make a significant difference.

If you have your own ideas for how you can help protect the environment for tomorrow, go to www.thetomorrowmovesproject.com, enter your idea, and you may win $5,000.

Tips to help protect the environment for tomorrow:

  • Reduce, reuse and recycle. It may be cliché, but it still holds true. Reducing your usage, reusing what you can – such as buying used instead of new products – and recycling your trash are still the easiest ways to make a difference.
  • Plant trees around your home. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, produce oxygen, provide homes for birds and other wildlife, reduce noise pollution and help cool your home.

We’ll be posting more tips soon, so check back…

White iPhone 4 is Thicker Than Black Model

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Saturday Apr 30, 2011

After 10 months of delays, the white iPhone 4 has arrived, and at closer inspection it turns out it’s not only late, but also thicker than its black sibling. The difference is very small, 0.2 millimeters to be more precise, but it’s enough to give headaches to some users who would find their cases wouldn’t fit on the white iPhone 4.

Ryan Cash, who posted comparison shots of the two models on his blog, first noticed the difference in thickness between the white and black iPhone 4. He didn’t measure the devices, but the difference is noticeable with the naked eye. Then, the TiPb blog took the measurements and elucidated the mystery: indeed, the white iPhone 4 is 0.2 millimeters thicker than the black one.

The difference, from roughly 9.3mm thickness of the black iPhone to 9.5mm of the white model, doesn’t come from the steel frame of the device, but from the white glass part on the front of the device. Apple doesn’t list any difference in thickness on its website between the white and black iPhone 4.

Apple did not explain why the white iPhone 4 is thicker, but this could have something to do with why the device was delayed for 10 months. In an interview this week, Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Senior VP Phil Schiller said the white coloring of the white iPhone caused issues with manufacturing the model, so the extra thickness could be a result of this process.

Those who don’t use a case for their white iPhone 4 should have no problems with the extra thickness. But the situation is slightly more intricate if you want to use a case, as most of them are designed to fir snugly on the 9.3mm black iPhone 4. Initial tests indicate that Apple’s bumper cases, and most cases that aren’t subject to depth will still fit the thicker white iPhone 4, but if you plan on buying a case for your shiny new white iPhone 4, it would be

A Talk With Al Gore About Climate Change, Birthers and His New App

Posted by admin under iPad News on Saturday Apr 30, 2011

Al Gore, February 2011

No, Al Gore did not invent the Internet, but the former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner has always has a hand in high-tech, even as he warned the world about global warming. Those two interests are intersecting with the release of a new iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch app version of his recent climate and energy book Our Choice. The app is one of the first truly multimedia e-books, with interactive graphics, video, photos with geolocation and narration by Gore himself. Gore sat down with TIME’s Bryan Walsh in the New York offices of Gore’s firm Generation Investment to talk about the Our Choice app, the state of the climate movement and post-truth politics.

Q: Does the app get you a new audience for the book?

A: Yes it does. We live in a multi-platform world. I think that the app experience is a magical one that will give it a lot of velocity as a media form because it combines books, movies, audio, animation and interactive features. There is nothing between you and the content, and there is no computer hurdle to clear. You just touch it with your finger, blow on it and manipulate it. It’s very intuitive.
(See why Al Gore wants businesses to step up to stop climate change.)

Q: Will this change the writing and the reading experience? Is this the future of books?

A: This is an evolutionary process that will find it’s own pace. My personal view is that it is going to happen fairly quickly. The advantages of an app are immediately obvious to many people who interact with it. But just as movies need a script and scripts need scriptwriters, apps that are rich in content will still be derived in one way or another from books. At some point, though, it will reach an inflection point where people begin to think about in the first instance of how the

Don’t have an iPad 2? No problem [Michigan Chronicle (MI)]

Posted by admin under iPad News on Saturday Apr 30, 2011

(Michigan Chronicle (MI) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) If you’re looking for a slender tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab should be added to your short list. It’s not the iPad 2, but it’s a nice device to play with.

Of late, I’ve become quite satisfied with the Droid operating system (this runs 2.2), so navigating through the various features of the device was fairly easy.

You’ll have to decide what you need a tablet for. If you’re getting into e-books, some social networking, or mobile gaming, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is a great choice.

It takes high quality pictures, too. Boasting a brilliant seven-inch touch screen, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has HTML Web browsing experience with full support for Adobe Flash 10.1 for video and mobile gaming, and a IGHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application processor.

So yeah, the key here is Flash video, which the iPad still doesn’t have. This makes the device as close to a miniature computer as you’re going to get. It puts the Web in your hands.

Some other applications include V CAST Music and V CAST Song ID, VZ Navigator, Slacker Radio, Kindle for Android, BLOCKBUSTER On Demand presented by V CAST Video, and the exclusive golf game, “Let’s Golf,” will be available on the Samsung Galaxy Tab. In addition to text, picture and video messaging, the Samsung Galaxy Tab will also feature V CAST Apps, Verizon Wireless’ mobile storefront offering hundreds of applications for businesses and consumers at launch.

Taposé – Brings the Microsoft Courier to iPad

Posted by admin under iPad News on Saturday Apr 30, 2011

In 2009, details started emerging about Microsoft’s rumored tablet project, which received the codename Microsoft Courier. Around that time everyone was touting Apple’s rumored tablet as solely an entertainment device, while the Courier was being presented as an interactive tablet with dual-touchscreens that folded like a booklet.

As soon as Apple unveiled the iPad, all Courier plans ended. On April 29, 2010, Microsoft confirmed the Courier project would no longer be supported, and the rest is history. However, a Kickstarter Project has taken the concept of the Courier and plans to bring it back via an iPad app called Taposé.

Taposé has been designed by two clever Boeing engineers, Benjamin Monnig and Ricky Drake. Both developers have set out to bring back the Courier concept into the iPad.

Although Taposé has not been released yet onto the App Store, the Kickstarter project has been quite successful thus far. The two developers have been able to raise $13,238, which has surpassed the original $10,000 goal. The two engineers are ready to start the final development before Taposé becomes a final product.

The application features a split interface design that will allow iPad users to interact with multiple apps simultaneously, accompanied by what the developers call Taposé collections. The application is being designed to let you multitask and move between apps across two screens.

The following are some of the features as described by the developers:

Split Interface Design

  • Drag and drop from Safari
  • Drag addresses to Maps for directions
  • Drag contacts over collections to share
  • Finish calculations without leaving Taposé
  • Full screen capabilities, and much more

Middle Separation Bar

  • Place images, sticky notes, maps, and more into the middle separation bar which acts as a temporary holder
  • Allows easy organization and movement between pages and collections
  • Slide to adjust the view sizes

Taposé has some great potential. We hope Benjamin and Ricky are quite successful in this new endeavor. After all, Taposé can evolve into a very handy productivity application for the iPad.

If you want to support this project,

Verizon iPhone untether

While GSM-iPhone owners have had the pleasure of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iOS iteration, 4.3.2, Verizon CDMA-iPhone owners haven’t been so lucky — until now.

Sn0wbreeze 2.6.1, a Windows-only utility brought to you by the folks from iH8sn0w, is now able to install an untethered jailbreak for the Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.7. But what about all those Mac-owning Verizon iPhone users who want in on the untethered action?

No problem — simply jailbreak with redsn0w as per normal, then head to Cydia and install the Verizon Untether for 4.2.7 from the http://cydia.pushfix.info repo. Quick, simple and now without the need to connect to your computer to reboot.

Apple’s iPad 2 Smart Cover color conspiracy

Posted by admin under iPad News on Saturday Apr 30, 2011

The Apple Smart Cover for iPad 2 comes in 10 colors, but arguably the best colors cost more.

(Credit:
Apple)

The other day I noticed that one of our tech editors here, Joe Kaminski, had a light blue Smart Cover on his
iPad 2. Now Joe prides himself on being kind of a macho guy–some of you might know him from the Digital City podcast–so a little ribbing was in order.

I said, “Dude, why does a guy like you have baby-blue iPad cover?”

“I know, I know,” he said. “It’s kind of lame, but it’s the best color they had in the cheaper version. What, I’m gonna get that DayGlo orange or green one? No way. All the colors suck and I wasn’t gonna pay no $69 for the friggin’ leather version after already paying $750 for the iPad [he has the 64GB white Wi-Fi-only version]. So I went with the blue. At least it’s blue.”

“Light blue,” I reiterated.

“I know, I know,” he said. “But I’m telling you, man, Apple did it on purpose. They made the good colors in the leather version so you’d pay the extra $30.”

He then showed me Apple’s Web site and forced me to assess my color options for the Smart Cover. Now I’m sure plenty of people out there like pastels, but I had to agree with Joe, none of the colors in the cheaper $39 polyurethane version were appealing to me (I probably would have gone with orange if I had to). However, I did like both the carbon and navy blue in the “aniline-dyed” Italian leather version. Black would have been fine, too.

We took the matter to Senior Editor Scott Stein, who owns an iPad 2 with a lime-green Smart Cover. He agreed with our theory that Apple, in its own subtle way (or not-so-subtle way, depending on how you look at it), was nudging people to step up to the more expensive leather covers. However, he said that the Apple salespeople at the store

April 28 (Bloomberg) — Bloomberg’s Rich Jaroslovsky reviews two new tablet computers, the G-Slate from LG Electronics Inc. and T-Mobile USA, and Acer Inc.’s Iconia Tab A500.

It’s been a bit more than a year
since Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPad went on sale, and almost every computer
and smartphone maker launched crash programs to match it. The
fruits of those efforts are now reaching the market, with each
manufacturer searching for some feature to help it stand out
from the crowd.

The latest entries are the G-Slate, from LG Electronics
Inc. (066570)
and T-Mobile USA, and the Iconia Tab A500, from Acer Inc. (2353)
Both run “Honeycomb,” the tablet-optimized version of Google
Inc. (GOOG)
’s Android operating system, and are powered by Nvidia
Corp. (NVDA)
’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor. One competes on features,
one on price. While both have attractions, neither will keep
Steve Jobs awake at night.

The G-Slate is the more interesting, combining two of the
buzziest options in consumer electronics at the moment: 3-D and
4G. Unfortunately, neither is all it’s cracked up to be.

Physically, the G-Slate — known outside the U.S. as the
Optimus Pad — is a “tweener.” Its vivid 8.9-inch screen is
larger than Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM)’s BlackBerry PlayBook and
Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Tab, and smaller than the iPad
2 and the Xoom from Motorola Mobility Holdings

Eager buyers line up for white iPhone

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Saturday Apr 30, 2011

Customers waited in line at Apple's Fifth Avenue store to be the first to get the white iPhone 4.Dozens waited to be among the first to buy the white iPhone 4.
By David Goldman, staff writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Think the most anticipated iPhone 4 of 2011 was Verizon’s? Bzzt.

Based on one totally unscientific data point — the number of people who got up early to camp out in front of Apple’s flagship store on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue — the mythic white iPhone won hands-down.

Forty-five early risers were on line at the Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) store to snap up the long-awaited white iPhone 4 on Thursday. The store is open 24 hours, but the white iPhone didn’t go on sale until 8 a.m.

The Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500) iPhone, which went on sale in February, got off to a much quieter start. Just eight people were in line right before that device went on sale, though the freezing cold may have been a factor.

One of the first buyers on Thursday waited in both lines.

“I had the Verizon 16 GB black iPhone 4, but I came back to go white,” said Brandon Nuccio, a New York resident. “I don’t technically need it. It’s more of an aesthetic thing for me.”

Nuccio said he paid the full $599 list price for the phone, since it was too late to return and exchange his previous iPhone 4. He is trying to sell his black iPhone to make up for some of the cost.

Alan Diaz was a little luckier.

“I got a black iPhone 4 a couple days ago, but I wanted to see the white one, so I traded the black one in,” said Diaz, who had been waiting in line since 4 a.m. “I wanted to be unique.”

Several other white iPhone customers also already had the black
