An Australian travel website is super excited about Fairfax Media’s new iPad apps for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, because they’ve been able to lay out their content in a friendlier iPad app style – wOOt?

<![CDATA[

site stats Fairfax Media, one of Australia’s major publishers, has finally come out with decent iPad apps following the relatively poor PDF-style apps it had in the past.

The apps, available at the iTunes App Store from this morning, are definitely nicely designed, with fast operation, smooth swiping, relatively minimal advertising, a dedicated video section, photos and videos in some stories, turning a newspaper into more of a magazine-style format.

While it’s definitely nice, is it a revolution? Certainly the folks over at Australian Business Traveller are impressed, although they do note that travellers won’t be able to use their beloved iPads to read apps as they take off or land, something that the humble newspaper has absolutely no issues with whatsoever.

After all, couldn’t Fairfax have delivered its content in a website specifically designed for the iPad and other tablets?

Sure, but then it wouldn’t be able to charge $8.99 a month in an easy fashion through Apple’s App Store payments system, which ensures a 30% cut goes to Apple’s coffers instead of Fairfax’s.

Of course, Fairfax won’t be making a dime from subscriptions anytime soon – it’s offering the app free of charge for six months, relying instead on some banner advertisers,

Intel has unveiled design guidelines for a new category of thin-and-light laptops, dubbed “Ultrabooks,” that take cues from Apple’s iPad and MacBook Air.

Intel executives detailed the new designs at the Computex trade show, Engadget reports. Ultrabooks will marry the performance and capabilities of a laptop with “tablet-like features” in a “thin, light and elegant design,” Executive Vice President Sean Maloney said in a statement.

According to Maloney, Intel aims to reach a 40 percent share of the consumer laptop market with the “no-compromise” Ultrabook by the end of 2012. The new class of mobile PCs will sport form factors less than 20mm thick and cost less than $1,000.

The first Ultrabooks will utilize the current-generation Sandy Bridge architecture, but, beginning in the first half of 2012, Intel plans to transition Ultrabooks to the next-generation “Ivy Bridge” processors.

In 2013, the chipmaker hopes to introduce products codenamed “Haswell” as the “third step toward achieving the Ultrabook and reinventing the capabilities of the laptop in ultra thin and light, responsive and more secure designs.” Intel claims the Haswell processors will reduce microprocessor power to “half of today’s design point.”

The first Ultrabook laptops will arrive in time for the 2011 holiday shopping season, Intel said. ASUS will be one of the initial launch partners of the Ultrabook specification with the UX21 Ultrabook.

“At ASUS, we are very much aligned with Intel’s vision of Ultrabook,” said chairman Johnny Shih. “Our customers are demanding an uncompromised computing experience in a lightweight, highly portable design that responds to their needs quickly. Transforming the PC into an ultra thin, ultra responsive device will change the way people interact with their PC.”

Pundits expressed skepticism at the new Ultrabook design, calling it a “makeover” of the struggling netbook category. They also noted that, several years ago, Intel attempted to introduce a thin-and-light specification called Ultra-Low Voltage, but the category failed to catch on. However, Intel says it has learned from its mistakes. “We

Did An iPhone Just Get Video Of Bigfoot? (VIDEO)

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Tuesday May 31, 2011

Most people seem to be convinced the video is fake. “Not real! You can tell it’s a man walking,” one commentator named Blueshockeyboys said.

“I have never given it much thought, but now I’m not so sure. Seem real enough to me,” Samantha, who did not give her last name out to interviewers, said to KLXY.com.

Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch, is a mythical ape like beast, that can walk upright and has the mannuerisms of a humanoid. It’s been “sighted” several times in the Great Pacific Northwest. While it’s mainly believed to be an urban legend, there are some legitimate scientists such as Jane Goodall and Jeffrey Meldrum, who believe in its existence.

Samsung demands to see Apple’s next iPhone, iPad

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Tuesday May 31, 2011

Computerworld - In the latest round of an ongoing patent and trademark battle, Samsung on Friday asked a federal judge to make Apple provide the Korean electronics giant with samples of its next-generation iPhone and iPad.

Samsung asked U.S. District Court Judge Koh to force Apple to give it “a sample of the final, commercial version of the next generation iPhone that Apple will release, whether that product will be known as the ‘iPhone 4S,’ ‘iPhone 5,’ or some other name,” according to a motion filed in a California federal court Friday.

The Korean company also made a similar demand for “the next generation iPad that Apple will release, whether that product will be known as the ‘iPad 3,’ ‘Third Generation iPad,’ or some other name.”

Assuming Koh agrees with Samsung, Apple would have until June 17 to hand over the iPhone and iPad samples.

Samsung’s move followed Apple’s motion earlier this month demanding that its rival show it several of its newest smartphones and tablets as part of the discovery phase of a lawsuit Apple filed against Samsung. Koh granted Apple’s motion.

Samsung and Apple have been locked in a legal battle since mid-April, when Apple accused Samsung of “slavishly” copying the iPhone and iPad with several of its smartphones and its Galaxy Tab tablets. Apple claimed that Samsung’s devices infringed 10 Apple patents and violated two trademarks.

Days later, Samsung counterattackedby filing lawsuits against Apple in Germany, Japan and Korea.

Apple, which is notoriously secretive about its products — the company has not yet publicly revealed the successor to the iPhone 4, its name or when it will go on sale — refused Samsung’s outside-the-court request earlier this month for the next iPhone and iPad, according to Samsung’s account of negotiations.

Most analysts believe Apple will not begin selling a new iPhone until September, breaking with its practice the last four years, when it launched a new model in June or July.

Samsung acknowledged that the Apple products are not yet available, but argued that the future iPhone and iPad would be

The iPhone 4S will also be equipped with ARM technology in its Cortex A9 processor. There were rumors about Apple going with a dual core processor, mimicking a trend set by Android smartphones. Other hardware upgrades include additional internal antennas that can serve as an international phone with CDMA and GSM. This also allows the device to be compatible with both Verizon and ATT networks.

The launch for iPhone 4S is said to be sometime in the late summer month possibly as early as July. As for the iPhone 5, it will make its debut in the spring of 2012 according to rumors.

When will Apple iPhone 5 arrive, finally?

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Tuesday May 31, 2011

That’s quite some change in the release schedule, albeit the unofficial one, based on rumors and leaks. Earlier, it was reported widely that Apple would begin production of iPhone 5 in July and that the product could hit stores in September. Before that, the date was sometime in June this year!

However gadget market observers read the mind of Apple correctly to find out that the fabled iPhone 5 release won’t take place this June. For they gauged, correctly, that Apple wouldn’t use the WWDC platform for a hardware launch. It was mainly meant to be based on the software theme.

The gadget market had taken cues from Apple’s statement in March which had said that the focus of the June conference of developers will be on iOS and Mac OS. “If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss,” Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, had said.

    ‘The Heist’ iPhone app hands-on

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Tuesday May 31, 2011

If you’re a Mac user, there’s a decent chance you’ve heard of Macheist, a deal site that bundles different Mac applications together for a ridiculously low price. While The Heist isn’t a bundled software deal, it’s an insanely addictive puzzle game for the iPhone based on a theme of trying to crack into a safe — hence the title. There are four different puzzle types and over 60 levels, each one with distinct themes and objectives. And, in addition, there’s a promised prize to any user that completes every level in the game. Not a bad hook, right? The game is built by developer TapTapTap, makers of the Camera+ iPhone app, and it’s available now for $0.99 in the App Store — and it’s currently sitting pretty as the No. 1 paid app.

BeenVerified, the company behind the Antoine Dodson-endorsed Sex Offender Tracker app, is back with another offering that looks to disrupt the reverse directory space. The firm’s latest app, NumberGuru, provides users with free unlimited reverse phone number look-ups. The app is also tied to a social service where users can post comments about numbers they look up with NumberGuru, helping to identify phone spammers for future searchers. Available immediately for the iPhone, Android smartphones and on the Web, the app and service are completely free, and BeenVerified told us that the company plans to keep it that way. BeenVerified also told BGR that since the app was updated last week, NumberGuru is averaging about 10 look-ups per second, or 864,000 look-ups each day. Hit the break for links to install the free app on your iPhone or your Android smartphone.
