Developers can already use a number of third-party SDKs to integrate such things as maps, ads, videos and so on into their apps. How about ticket sales? That’s now possible as well thanks to the new SDK from the online ticketing marketplace Seatwave.

The functionality provides developers with a new way to monetize their apps, without the need for banner ads, making for a much better experience (as far as I’m concerned). The problem, however, is that not every app is suited to offer tickets. Music-based apps work perfectly and so does those dealing with sport. Moreover, location-based services could also provide its users with nearby events with the option to buy tickets right from within the application.

Interested developers can check out Seatwave’s dedicated developer portal from where they can also check out a number of launch partner apps.

Final note, if you happen to make some cool app that integrates the capability, make sure to send us an email – we may be interested to check it out and let our readers know what you’ve come up with.

‘Tis the season for giveaways, fa la la la la, la la la la.

That’s right folks, it’s the most wonderful time of the year right now and what better way to celebrate the holidays than by giving away some sweet, sweet tablets.

For this giveaway, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Gameloft to help celebrate the launch of The Oregon Trail: American Settler by giving away your choice of an iPad 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. This giveaway won’t be one of our traditional “leave a comment, tweet this, etc.” types of giveaways, instead, this will all be taking place via Gameloft’s Facebook giveaway app that they’ve painstakingly made just for us.

If you haven’t played The Oregon Trail: American Settler, it takes the classic Oregon Trail and twists it with a micro-managing sim similar to FarmVille. There are a bunch of challenges to complete, resources to collect, and wild animals to shoot. I’m not usually a fan of these kinds of games, but I enjoyed my time with this game, that is, until I received my new iPhone 4S and my game save mysteriously vanished. I guess I wasn’t cut out for a job in the old west.

So without further ado, here’s what you’ll need to do in order to qualify for an entry to this giveaway:

Facebook Timeline hits Android app, iOS mobile site

Posted by admin under iPad on Friday Dec 16, 2011

Today the new Timeline Facebook layout has been rolled out to the general public to mixed reviews, and that launch includes mobile. The official Facebook app for Android now sports the new look, as well as the mobile site for iOS devices. This isn’t to say the iOS Facebook app won’t be getting Timeline at some point; in fact, the original launch showcased an iPhone running the feature just fine.

If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, the new layout offers a nice big banner image behind your profile picture, then blasts through your updates in a chronological order. The main idea is to present your whole life as a timeline, which in the long run actually makes a fair bit of sense, given how much people use Facebook. On Android in particular, Facebook has managed to compete with most of the preloaded Google apps for popularity. Of course, every time Facebook changes anything, there’s a ton of public backlash, but at this point, we should all be getting used to the arbitrary changes Lord Zuckerbeast implements.

Though Facebook is saying that the timeline changes are applicable to their “touch” site,  I’m not seeing the changes on anything other than an iDevice. Feel free to check for yourself at m.facebook.com.  Android users can update their app in the Market.

Apple gives internship to iOS concept designer Jan-Michael Cart

Posted by admin under iPad on Thursday Dec 15, 2011

Jan-Michael Cart is best known around the Internet for working with MacRumors to create a concept design of the iOS Assistant, which would later become Siri on the iPhone 4S. The mockup shown in the photo above turned out to be remarkably accurate. He certainly proves his design skills here. Oh, but don’t take my word for it, Apple just gave him a seven-month internship.

Is it odd that Apple snatched up someone who actually aided in leaking one of their biggest products this year? Yes and no. Yes, simply because of Apple’s well-known reputation as being one of the most secretive companies on the planet, if not the most secretive. No, because the Cupertino-based technology giant previously hired Peter Hajas and Nicholas Allegra, two jailbreak experts. Steve Jobs always did have respect for rebels.

When he’s not envisioning iOS improvements (and interning at Apple) Cart is a student at the University of Georgia — a student that may be on his way to a career earlier than planned. Though Apple didn’t exactly hire Cart just yet. He was only given a temporary internship presumably involving user interface design. While he did create that mockup of Siri, he’s also known for other impressive concept designs for Notification Center, iMessage on Mac OS X Lion, iOS widgets, and more.

Microsoft releases SkyDrive for iOS and Windows Phone

Posted by admin under iPad on Wednesday Dec 14, 2011

Every leading mobile platform has its own cloud solution. iOS has iCloud, Android has Google’s range of services, and Windows Phone has Microsoft’s SkyDrive. Unlike its competitors, Microsoft is reaching out to other platforms and releasing a SkyDrive app for iOS as well as Windows Phone.

SkyDrive is the company’s cloud computing solution that lets you store music, photos, documents, and more. The new apps will let you browse folders, share files, delete files and read their OneNote notebooks. Some of this functionality is built into Windows Phone, but it’s all new to iOS owners. The SkyDrive app for iOS is available for free from the iOS App Store. The Windows Phone version will be available soon.

2011 in Review: iOS

Posted by admin under iPad on Tuesday Dec 13, 2011

Overall, it was another banner year for Apple and iOS. The platform had its ups and down, but remained strong in the face of stiff competition from Android. Throughout the year, the iPad was the leading tablet and the iPhone was at the top of the smartphone market.

iPhone 4 on Verizon

Apple kicked off the year with the launch of the highly anticipated CDMA iPhone 4. The handset landed on Verizon with lots of fanfare, but surprisingly small lines. Analysts predicted the CDMA version would take customers away from ATT, but that mass exodus did not happen. Early sales revealed both the Verizon and ATT version sold well. It was Verizon customers who were scooping up the iPhone, not ATT customers jumping ship. Apple sold 18.65 million iPhones in the first three months of 2011. Of those 18 million, Verizon sold 2.2 million and ATT sold 3.6 million.

iPad 2 launch

Soon after the iPhone 4 launched on Verizon, Apple released the iPad 2 . The iPad 2 was a nice, but not extraordinary, upgrade from the original iPad. The tablet included a dual-core A5 processor, front and rear-facing camera, and a thinner profile. It replaced the original iPad and came in at the same price point. People lined up for the iPad when it launched in March and inventory plummeted as Apple faced the “motherload of all backlogs.” Apple couldn’t make the devices fast enough, and quarterly sales fell. The company only sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter which was significantly less than the 7.33 million iPads the company sold during the holiday 2010 quarter.

WWDC and iOS 5

After a difficult spring, Apple was ready to kick it up a notch and introduced iOS 5 at WWDC. The latest version of OS included several notable features including iCloud syncing, a new notification center, iMessages, reminders and more. Steve Jobs, in what would become his last public keynote, detailed iOS 5 in a lively presentation. Developers were able to download the iS 5 beta right away while consumers had to wait until the fall for the next generation mobile OS to launch. Apple did well in this mid-year quarter and sold 20.34 million iPhones and 9.25 million iPads.

iPhone 4S launch

After much speculation, the iPhone 4S launched in October of this year, and people lined up to grab Apple’s

Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry users want an iPad

Posted by admin under iPad on Monday Dec 12, 2011

Once again the iPad validates itself as the number one desired tablet in a new survey by Maritz Research. In addition to the iPad being the most popular brand among businesses, people that own Android, BlackBerry and Microsoft Windows mobile phones show a preference for iPads over any other tablet else. This is interesting because you would think people who have a particular type of OS would pick the same OS when it comes to purchasing a tablet. Wrong.

This is how the numbers shake out:

  • BlackBerry users - More than half (53%) of survey respondents who identified themselves as BlackBerry users said they would like an iPad if they were to buy a tablet.
  • Android users - Respondents who identified as Android phone users favored the iPad over the Kindle Fire and Galaxy Tab with 41% indicating preference for the iPad.
  • Windows Phone users - Lastly, WP users exhibited comparable characteristics with 40% selecting preference for the iPad.

This doesn’t really surprise me because the survey reflects my feelings on the tablet market as a whole. Personally, I prefer Android as my mobile operating system of choice, but objectively speaking, I’ve yet to see a better tablet experience than the iPad. So, if you were to ask me if I’d take the iPad 2 over what’s available now, I’d say yes. That said, Android tablets are getting much better, and at a fast pace. Case in point – the Asus Eee Transformer Prime is a beastly quad-core slate that is far ahead in specs when compared to the iPad.

The Is it Lice App is the first application designed to assist parents with a crucial step in the lice management cycle, detection. With step-by-step instructions, photos and video, the App is an essential tool for parents who need to identify lice and nits.
