Casual dining chain allows guests to pay with their smartphones

Posted by admin under iPad on Sunday Apr 29, 2012

Casual dining chain T.G.I. Friday’s launched iOS and Android apps and right from the bat they allow users to pay with their phones. In order to use this handy functionality, start a tab the moment you sit at a local T.G.I. Friday’s, keep track of all the drinks and meals you had, and finally pay with a tap of the button.

Of course that’s just one piece of the puzzle, with the application also allowing you to locate nearby T.G.I. Friday’s, check out special drinks and menu promotions, and learn about the latest happenings at your local Friday’s restaurant. Moreover, it is said that users are able to “extend the social life of the bar to their online networks” by sharing updates from happy hour.

At the moment, the pay at the table functionality is available at more than 300 participating restaurants with more coming soon… or so we think.

T.G.I. Friday’s apps are free to download and you can get them from the links below.

Apple’s WWDC 2012 set for June 11-15 in San Francisco (Updated)

Posted by admin under iPad on Wednesday Apr 25, 2012

Apple has just announced the official dates for their annual World Wide Developers Conference. The conference is set for June 11th to 15th in San Francisco. Tickets are limited to 1 per person and 5 per organization, and are going for $1,599 a piece. Student developers aged 13 and up can apply for a scholarship that grants them free access to the event, and Apple has set aside up to 150 tickets for the scholarship.

If you’re an iOS or Mac developer, you should probably go ahead and pen those dates on your calendar and buy those tickets now. WWDC 2011 sold out in 10 hours, and we expect WWDC to sell out equally as fast.  To learn more about WWDC, be sure to check out Apple’s about section.

Update: In just about two hours after they went on sale, tickets to WWDC are now sold out.

Beer bottles used to smuggle 216 iPhones

Posted by admin under iPad on Monday Apr 23, 2012

China is apparently the place to be when it comes to smuggling iPhones. From housewives smuggling large amounts of iPhones and iPads to one dude taping about 30 iPhones onto his person, it seems more and more would-be smugglers are trying to make a quick buck in the world’s largest nation. So, why China?

China has a large import tax on products like the iPhone, making them key targets for folks with disposable cash who want to make a quick buck. Would-be smugglers can purchase iPhones outside of China, sneak into China and sell at a slightly marked up price for a profit. Chinese officials are quickly wising up to these smuggling operations, and we’re hearing more and more stories of people getting caught at the border.

Today’s busted smuggling ring is a bit on the crazy side. An older lady was offered some cash to be a mule for the iPhone smuggling operation, and was given over 70 bottles of beer that had been smashed, filled with a few iPhones a piece, then taped back together and wrapped in a dark plastic bag. Unfortunately for these knuckleheads, alcohol bottles just beg to be searched by customs officials, so over 70 of them wrapped in black plastic bags probably wasn’t the best idea of the bunch. Though, if they had to drink all the bottles to empty them, I guess we should give them some props for coming up with a halfway acceptable idea while completely trashed.

We can’t wait for the next episode of Busted: iPhone Smugglers.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 hitting AppStore on April 25

Posted by admin under iPad on Sunday Apr 22, 2012

Next week superhero fans with iPhone and iPod Touch devices will be able to grab the all-new Marvel vs Capcom 2 from the AppStore. There’s a robust 56-character roster, including Wolverine, Ryu, Iron Man, Mega Man and many, many others.

Similarly to the original Marvel vs Capcom, you can pit your favorite characters from the Marvel and Capcom universes against each other. Moreover, there’s the so called “Variable System” that allows you to tag in other team members at any time and, when needed, execute the most powerful attack – “Team Hyper Combo,” where all three members of a team combine their ultimate powers.

The release date, in case you wonder, is set at Wednesday, April 25. In the meantime, Capcom was kind enough to share a bunch of screenshots, which we’re showing you below. Enjoy!

Learn to make cupcakes with Food Network’s new iPad app

Posted by admin under iPad on Friday Apr 20, 2012

Food Network is out with a new iPad app, focused around cupcakes. As you can imagine, it comes with a bunch (more than 100) of cupcake recipes and ideas, plus “frosting recipes” from Food Network talent, kitchens and shows — all of which are browsable by categories like Cupcake Centerpieces, Cupcakes for Dinner, Hall of Fame and more. In addition, there are how-to videos, interactive decorating tips and tricks, and a number of original, high-res images of recipes and cupcakes that, as far as I can tell, look like the one you’ll find in magazines and cookbooks…

All in all you’re a fan of cupcakes (or have a child who loves ‘em), you may want to grab Food Network Cupcakes! and get some ideas. It costs 3 bucks, which is like nothing for all the benefit you can get in return — i.e. when you make your own cupcakes.

Should you care that your smartphone won’t always have the latest OS?

Posted by admin under iPad on Wednesday Apr 18, 2012

Over the course of a day, we heard “confirmation” that the current crop of Windows Phone 7 devices will and won’t get the upgrade to Windows Phone 8 “Apollo”, leaving us with more questions than answers. Yet another source suggested that these phones may get a Windows Phone 8-lite, akin to the Windows 7 Starter made for netbook computers. For me, this whole issue of whether or not a device will get an upgrade brings up a discussion worth having in the mobile community; namely, should we expect that our phones will always be kept current with the latest version of the mobile operating system?

Ready the torches and pitchforks, people, as I’m going with a resounding NO! When we purchase a device, we purchase it because after exhaustive research, we’ve found a device that fits our mobile needs. When a software maker such as Google announces a new version of the operating system, sure we may lust after some of the features. After all, Android beam and face unlock are cool, but should we expect that our devices, which are now 6+ months old, mind you, are entitled to the latest version of the OS and all of the features found therein?

Generally, when a new version of a desktop OS is released, the hardware requirements are generally enhanced, as you need more processing power to handle some of the basic features of the OS. Some computers simply can’t run Windows 7 or Mac OSX Lion. If they were allowed to do so, performance and user experience could suffer dramatically. Similarly, I wouldn’t expect the Samsung Behold II, or even the original Galaxy S phones to be upgraded to a full version of Android 4. They simply wouldn’t really be able to handle it. And, before you yell at me for referencing the Behold II, I actually saw one being used out in the wild today. They’re still out there!

I don’t think the average customer cares (or even knows) what version of Android/iOS/Windows Phone they’re running, as long

Quickoffice updated its iPad app, allowing users to create and edit 2007-2010 Microsoft PowerPoint files. And it’s not just basic things you can edit on your iPad – you can view, create and edit numbered lists in PowerPoint files; select from over 100 shapes in 5 categories and insert into presentations.

Moreover, the updated Quickoffice Pro HD also adds native iPad email client support, which was apparently one of the most requested features. In addition, there are five additional localizations, including Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Dutch.

Quickoffice remains one of the best mobile office apps (if not the best) and it’s available for all popular platforms. iPad version costs 20 bucks and you can grab it from a link below.

Big brother is watching, and that’s not going away anytime soon.

Whether we like it or not, our personal lives will continue to get a lot less private. Even though there are government bodies out there dedicated to privacy, the fact that most people are connected to the internet 24/7 via smartphones, tablets, PCs, and laptops mean that services we use will have unprecedented access to information about us and/or the things we do in our daily lives.

Placeme is a cool, yet creepy application that gives us a glimpse into our always-connected future. Developed by Alohar Mobile, Placeme is the ultimate life tracking application for Android and iOS devices which requires little to no input from the user. Placeme runs in the background, and tracks almost literally everything you do; from recording the route you take to work to noting the places you go to, Placeme keeps an exhaustive log of your every activity. And because it doesn’t require check ins

Placeme stores the information in an encrypted manner on its servers, and vows not to share the information with outside sources. So what exactly does Placeme do for you that warrants having such an application on your device?

Not a heck of a lot, yet, though according to Alohar Mobile CEO Sam Liang, Placeme has the power to become a truly powerful and smart personal assistant. Imagine your phone knowing what your standard work hours are, then scanning your route home for current traffic information. If it finds a quicker way, it could alert you to take the alternate route, then automatically link up to your navigation software to guide you.

Soon, our phones will truly go the extra mile to make our lives easier, and all you have to give up is a little bit of privacy. Of course, these extra services would have to cost money or Alohar Mobile will have to monetize somehow, as nobody is in the business to simply give things away.

I’m honestly a bit reluctant to give Placeme a shot until I
