Bibliotastic Users Prefer Apple’s iPad to Amazon’s Fire

Posted by admin under Apple News on Friday Jan 27, 2012

London, United Kingdom, January 26, 2012 –(PR.com)– Amazon grabbed the headlines when it launched its Fire tablet last September principally because of its low cost versus similar devices. However, the device has caused some controversy given the extent to which users are locked in to a proprietary Amazon environment that prevents them from loading applications from Google’s Android market and instead pushes Amazon apps and services at them.

Bibliotastic co-founder Bernard Gerard notes, “Android tablets like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab are fantastic portable computing devices – like smartphones on steroids. But they pack in a lot of the latest technology which makes them expensive pieces of hardware. Amazon on the other hand can afford to sell the hardware at a loss, much as it has done with the Kindle, in the hope of making more profits as a retailer of content – books, movies, apps, etc. It is really a bit like walking round with an Amazon cash register – they already have your credit card details and they are ready to ring the till. In many respects this is similar to the Apple approach. However, Apple’s iPad is a much more powerful computing device and it has a much greater choice of apps. As our bibliotastic user survey shows, consumers are still prepared to pay a premium for Apple products.”

Bibliotastic survey: Which tablet would you prefer?
· Apple iPad 2 (from $499) 41%
· Amazon Fire ($199) 27%
· Samsung Galaxy Tab (from $469) 21%
· Zantac (for gadget indigestion; from $0.30) 11%

The survey was concluded in January 2012 and involved 187 participants. Details can be found here: http://www.bibliotastic.com/content/poll/tablets

MacWorld 2012 photo tour

Posted by admin under iPad on Friday Jan 27, 2012

MacWorld has changed a lot ever since Apple pulled out of the show. The once-mighty conference once saw the introduction of world-changing devices like the iPhone was reduced to little more than a trade show for iPhone covers last year. While strolling the halls during MacWorld 2012, I began to get a sense of optimism around the future of MacWorld for multiple reasons.

MacWorld 2012 still has a lot of case makers here but some of these are actually pretty darn cool. There were some iPad and iPhone stands which were custom built to attach to a guitar to help teach people how to play. If that’s not your flavor, there are cases with wallets built in or multiple iPad stands and docks. Take one listen to the Bang and Olufsen AirPlay-enabled portable speaker and you’ll be happy to see that there’s a showcase for all these iAccessories.

The accessories are an interesting part of the iPhone and iPad story, a tale which has helped to make Apple the most valuable company in the world. When we talk about the ecosystem advantage that Apple has over its competitors, we generally mean developers and apps but the uniformity of the iPhones and iPad enable a whole slew of interesting and cool accessories to sprout up around iDevices.

The mobile app showcase area could have been more flushed out at MacWorld, I thought. In fact, MacWorld 2012 is actually called MacWorld | iWorld and this shows how important the iOS part of Apple is becoming to the show and to the company.

MacWorld is never going to regain the glory it once had with Steve Jobs delivering a keynote to kick it off but I genuinely think there can be a bright future for this show. It’s still one of the only shows where I see a lot of people bring their kids, as its more fun than a trade show has any right to be. This year had people bouncing around on trampolines, Modest Mouse playing, a South Park

Tablets Changing the Way We do Business

Posted by admin under Apple News on Thursday Jan 26, 2012

San Diego, CA, January 25, 2012 –(PR.com)– Connectivity, portability, and app availability all factor in to the appeal of the tablet computer. Wireless and mobile broadband network enabled devices allow a portable workstation that can be used to conduct business anywhere. The weight of the tablet bests many laptops. The iPad, Sony Tablet S, and the Samsung Galaxy all weigh in at 1.3 lbs. With over 2,300 business apps in the app store via iTunes, and over 140,000 for iPad overall, tablets are the future for professionals and business.

“There’s no doubt that the tablet computer is here to stay, even more so when it comes to keeping business professionals productive on the move,” writes Joe Linford for Business Review USA, “Consumers are often attracted to a tablet’s hardware, and for this, the options are pretty much unlimited now that new models come in all shapes, sizes and operating system variations.”

The tablet industry is a booming sphere for business professionals and consumers. U.S. tablet sales, excluding iPad sales, reached $415 million in revenue from January to October, 2011. 1.2 million units and accessories raked in nearly $700 million in the tablet industry last year, and Apple iPad sales reported an all-time record for fourth quarter revenue and earnings by selling 11 million iPads. Motorola Mobility is suing Apple for infringing on six of its patents. The patents in question are related to wireless antennas, software, messaging, and data management — quite a bit of the entire experience of a smartphone is on the line here. Apple allegedly uses these patents in the iPhone 4S and iCloud.

The lawsuit was filed in Florida today and it’s just the latest battle in the larger smartphone patent wars.

“Apple’s infringing activities have caused and will continue to cause Motorola Mobility irreparable harm, for which it has no adequate remedy at law, unless Apple’s infringing activities are enjoined by this Court,” Motorola said as part of the case. The company wants compensation for damages and an injunction of both Apple products.

It’s probably no coincidence that this filing is taking place right before the EU decides whether to approve Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility. After all, one of the main reasons for the deal was so Google could help defend Android in patent wars against competitors. Acquiring Motorola gives Google access to its library of over 17,000 patents.

In December, Motorola won a 3G patent war against Apple in Germany. It just goes to show that while Apple might be able to slap Samsung around a few times, Motorola Mobility (soon to be combined with Google’s forces) is armed and ready for battle.

Apple: iPhone 4S had ‘breath-taking customer reception’

Posted by admin under iPad on Wednesday Jan 25, 2012

Apple had even more to say about its record-breaking Q1 2012 earnings in its quarterly earnings call. Apple CEO Tim Cook  attributes the all-time high of 37 million iPhones sold last quarter to “breath-taking customer reception” of the new iPhone 4S, which was introduced in October of 2011.

It would seem “breath-taking customer reception” just about hits the nail on the head. Matt Richman made a very interesting point about iPhone sales year after year thus far:

“In 2009, Apple sold more iPhones than it did in 2007 and 2008 combined. In 2010, Apple sold more iPhones than it did in 2007, 2008, and 2009 combined. Last year, Apple sold 93.1 million iPhones, slightly more than it did in in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 combined.”

Apple also announced some other interesting statistics that weren’t mentioned in the press release. The company sold a total of 62 million iOS devices in Q1 2012 and 315 million total for 2011. 85 million of those iOS device owners are now actively using iCloud. Over one million iPads were used for education and that was before Apple’s textbook announcement.

In profit-related news, Apple made $1.7 billion from iTunes (music, apps, etc.) alone. Also a fun statistic to throw out there: Apple’s total profits in Q1 2012 of $13.06 billion were more than Google’s total revenue of $10.58 billion.

In his answer to a question about whether lower-priced tablets such as the Kindle Fire harmed iPad sales, Tim Cook made perhaps one of his most notable quotes yet. He did dodge the question overall, but ended with a strong point: ”Last year was supposed to be the year of the tablet, but I think most people would agree it was the year of the iPad for the second year in a row.”

Five apps you’ll want to install on your jailbroken iPhone 4S

Posted by admin under iPad on Tuesday Jan 24, 2012

If you have an iPhone 4S like me, you probably spent the weekend jailbreaking it and testing out new jailbreak apps and tweaks. I spent some time in Cydia and compiled a list of five packages you should install on your 4S. They’re good enough to make me think twice about going back to stock iOS when Apple rolls out its next update.

3G Unrestrictor 5

3G Unrestrictor is a hack that’ll let you send and receive FaceTime calls, share photos via Photostream, download large files from iTunes and using your 3G connection. Most of these services only work on WiFi, which makes it impossible to use them while you’re on the go. The hack tricks the app into thinking it’s connected to a WiFi network, even though it’s connected via 3G. I often use 3G Unrestrictor  to FaceTime with my husband when I’m shopping. If I have a question about which speaker to buy, I can make a FaceTime call over 3G and show him his choices.

Zephyr

Zephyr is a multi-touch gesture hack that gives you access to the multitasking drawer so you can easily switch to a new app. It also lets you switch from open app to another open app with a side-to-side swipe. This latter gesture is extremely similar to OS X Lion which lets you swipe from one full screen app to another. Zephyr is available from Cydia for $2.99.

IntelliScreenX

IntelliScreenX is a lock screen and notification hack that’ll make it hard for you to go back to stock iOS 5. The add-on gives you a multi-pane notification screen that shows your email, Facebook news feed, Twitter stream, RSS feed, weather, and alerts. Besides just reading the content, IntelliScreenX also lets you mark items as read, click on links, and respond within the notifications. You can also display all this information on your lock screen, so you don’t have to unlock your phone to read the full text of an incoming email. IntelliScreenX is pricey at $9.99, but, in my opinion, it’s worth the investment.

Action Menu

Action Menu is a tweak that’ll add new options, besides the standard cut, copy and paste to the action menu. You can select text and define it, look up its meaning and even tweet it. The action menu is also contextual so you will be show different options depending on the app that you are using. The tweak is free, but the full action menu set is available in a plus pack that’ll cost you $2.99.

SiriToggles

SiriToggles is a Siri hack that’ll add a variety of commands including the ability to toggle on/off WiFi, Bluetooth, airplane mode and cellular data. You can also launch apps, adjust your brightness and retrieve your battery level. Now that the iPhone 4S is jailbroken, we can expect to see more
