Beer bottles used to smuggle 216 iPhones

Posted by admin under iPad on Monday Apr 23, 2012

China is apparently the place to be when it comes to smuggling iPhones. From housewives smuggling large amounts of iPhones and iPads to one dude taping about 30 iPhones onto his person, it seems more and more would-be smugglers are trying to make a quick buck in the world’s largest nation. So, why China?

China has a large import tax on products like the iPhone, making them key targets for folks with disposable cash who want to make a quick buck. Would-be smugglers can purchase iPhones outside of China, sneak into China and sell at a slightly marked up price for a profit. Chinese officials are quickly wising up to these smuggling operations, and we’re hearing more and more stories of people getting caught at the border.

Today’s busted smuggling ring is a bit on the crazy side. An older lady was offered some cash to be a mule for the iPhone smuggling operation, and was given over 70 bottles of beer that had been smashed, filled with a few iPhones a piece, then taped back together and wrapped in a dark plastic bag. Unfortunately for these knuckleheads, alcohol bottles just beg to be searched by customs officials, so over 70 of them wrapped in black plastic bags probably wasn’t the best idea of the bunch. Though, if they had to drink all the bottles to empty them, I guess we should give them some props for coming up with a halfway acceptable idea while completely trashed.

We can’t wait for the next episode of Busted: iPhone Smugglers.

Burbank, CA, April 20, 2012 –(PR.com)– Virtual Speech Center Inc., the provider of mobile applications for speech therapy, announced today the release of Auditory Workout, an iPad application available for download on Apple’s ITunes App store.

Auditory Workout was created by a certified speech and language pathologist for students ages 4–10 who exhibit auditory processing disorders or other related disorders (e.g., receptive language disorder or autism). This engaging, colorful app includes over 1,000 audio instructions. Children are welcomed by the basketball coach, who encourages them to work hard. Children earn a basketball for each correct response, and when they accumulate enough balls, they are rewarded with a game (a game of catch for younger children or/and basketball for older children).

Auditory Workout allows children to follow increasingly longer and more complex directions and includes more than 13 levels of difficulty. The directions are divided into four categories:

Basic and Spatial Directions
Quantitative directions

Learn to make cupcakes with Food Network’s new iPad app

Posted by admin under iPad on Friday Apr 20, 2012

Food Network is out with a new iPad app, focused around cupcakes. As you can imagine, it comes with a bunch (more than 100) of cupcake recipes and ideas, plus “frosting recipes” from Food Network talent, kitchens and shows — all of which are browsable by categories like Cupcake Centerpieces, Cupcakes for Dinner, Hall of Fame and more. In addition, there are how-to videos, interactive decorating tips and tricks, and a number of original, high-res images of recipes and cupcakes that, as far as I can tell, look like the one you’ll find in magazines and cookbooks…

All in all you’re a fan of cupcakes (or have a child who loves ‘em), you may want to grab Food Network Cupcakes! and get some ideas. It costs 3 bucks, which is like nothing for all the benefit you can get in return — i.e. when you make your own cupcakes.

Apple’s new iPad goes on sale in South Korea

Posted by admin under iPad, iPad News on Friday Apr 20, 2012

SEOUL (AFP) – Hundreds of customers lined up Friday at Apple stores as the new iPad went on sale in tech-savvy South Korea, about one month after it made its international debut.

Four of Apple’s stores in Seoul opened early to sell the tablet computer, and there were also queues outside branches in the city of network providers KT and SK Telecom, the two distributors of iPhones and iPads.

Arlington, TX, April 19, 2012 –(PR.com)– The $149.99 PKard solution lets people access web portals, collaboration sites and email directly from their iPads and iPhones with secure authentication to their personal smart cards. For example, a US military reservist can access educational or training materials on secure sites from his or her own iPad or iPhone. Security is maintained at all times whether playing music, or switching from app to app, preserving the Apple user experience. Importantly, no changes need to be requested for back-end servers making the solution easy to install for both individuals and organizations.

“The PKard Reader frees individuals from desktops and laptops to use their iPads and iPhones directly with the same smart card and PIN that they have always used,” explains Paul Nelson, Thursby’s Chief Technical Officer, “providing organizations for the first time with the strong two-factor security required to responsibly leverage consumer mobile and cloud technologies.” Almost five million Federal workers at hundreds of US government agencies and the Department of Defense (DoD) are issued smart cards for secure web access. Usage of smart cards is by no means limited to the government, or just the United States. Worldwide, almost one third of large corporations issue smart cards to their employees and last year alone over two hundred million healthcare smart cards were issued and over a billion in the financial sector.

The PKard Reader hardware plugs directly into the 30-pin connector on the bottom of an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch making for a simple, fast and secure plug’n’play solution that’s independent of the form factor of the particular i-device model. The solution supports industry and US government standards including ISO 7816, CAC, PIV, PIV-I, CIV, EMV level 1, NIST IR 6887, FCC class B part 15, CE, RoHS, HSPD-12, FIPS 140-2, and FIPS 201. It is the first of a family of software delivering secure enterprise functionality to Apple mobile devices, leveraging our own and third party readers and optionally partnered with third party apps and service providers.

Should you care that your smartphone won’t always have the latest OS?

Posted by admin under iPad on Wednesday Apr 18, 2012

Over the course of a day, we heard “confirmation” that the current crop of Windows Phone 7 devices will and won’t get the upgrade to Windows Phone 8 “Apollo”, leaving us with more questions than answers. Yet another source suggested that these phones may get a Windows Phone 8-lite, akin to the Windows 7 Starter made for netbook computers. For me, this whole issue of whether or not a device will get an upgrade brings up a discussion worth having in the mobile community; namely, should we expect that our phones will always be kept current with the latest version of the mobile operating system?

Ready the torches and pitchforks, people, as I’m going with a resounding NO! When we purchase a device, we purchase it because after exhaustive research, we’ve found a device that fits our mobile needs. When a software maker such as Google announces a new version of the operating system, sure we may lust after some of the features. After all, Android beam and face unlock are cool, but should we expect that our devices, which are now 6+ months old, mind you, are entitled to the latest version of the OS and all of the features found therein?

Generally, when a new version of a desktop OS is released, the hardware requirements are generally enhanced, as you need more processing power to handle some of the basic features of the OS. Some computers simply can’t run Windows 7 or Mac OSX Lion. If they were allowed to do so, performance and user experience could suffer dramatically. Similarly, I wouldn’t expect the Samsung Behold II, or even the original Galaxy S phones to be upgraded to a full version of Android 4. They simply wouldn’t really be able to handle it. And, before you yell at me for referencing the Behold II, I actually saw one being used out in the wild today. They’re still out there!

I don’t think the average customer cares (or even knows) what version of Android/iOS/Windows Phone they’re running, as long
