Financial Times pulls its apps from Apple store

Posted by gracelim under Apple News, iPad Apps, iPhone Apps on Wednesday Aug 31, 2011

LONDON (Reuters) – The Financial Times has pulled its iPad and iPhone apps from Apple’s App Store after losing a battle to keep control of customer data obtained through subscriptions.

Apple has recently begun to insist that subscriptions to apps that it hosts must go through its own store, giving Apple ownership of valuable data about customers from those transactions, as well as a 30 percent cut of revenues. Read More

Apple hires JailBreakMe iPhone hacker

Posted by gracelim under Apple News, iPhone News, iPhones on Monday Aug 29, 2011

Apple is constantly at war with “jailbreakers,” or hackers who break down the defenses of the Apple’s iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad and remove the restrictions the company places on them. Jailbreaking allows people to use iPhones on otherwise-unsupported carriers, download non-iTunes App Store apps and support a host of other functions that Apple doesn’t necessarily want iPhone owners doing with its hardware.

To stop jailbreaking, Apple is constantly releasing updates to its iOS software to plug security holes and make jailbreaking impossible. Meanwhile, jailbreakers are always pouring over Apple’s software to find new ways of breaking down Apple’s best defenses. But now it appears that despite their constant conflict, Apple has crossed the battle lines and offered a job – temporary though it may be – to a well-known jailbreaker. Read More

Enhance your new home with these iPhone apps

Posted by gracelim under iPad Apps, iPhone Apps on Sunday Aug 28, 2011

I recently purchased my first home, a condo on the northwest side of Chicago. Now, I’ve lived in plenty of apartments in the city previously, so I thought I knew what I was getting into. I figured it’d be smooth sailing once we got through the actual purchase process. And then a funny thing happened. I found that I actually cared about my home like a normal person might care for a small child.

This was my home! I had a responsibility to take care of it and make it look nice. Not to throw the same crappy apartment furniture in it and call it a day. So the last few weeks I’ve been using all sorts of apps to design my home the way I want it. It’s been an exhausting adventure, but I’ve stumbled upon some interesting apps that I thought were worth sharing for other people who are feeling that same sense of personal responsibility. Can Blackberry’s Touchscreen Handset take on the iPhone?

Posted by admin under iPhones on Tuesday Aug 9, 2011

The iPhone 4 is widely considered to be one of the best touchscreen smartphones currently available, and has achieved millions of sales to prove it. However, not every smartphone user is an iPhone convert.
Blackberry has a number of devoted users who prefer the convenience of their devices’ QWERTY keyboard, easy to use and reliable push email and Blackberry Messenger.

With their latest handset, the Bold 9900, by teaming their signature QWERTY keyboard with a responsive touchscreen, Blackberry hopes to reignite their slightly flagging position in the smartphone market by targeting the iPhone’s legion of fans.

• Power
The Blackberry Bold 9900 packs an impressive 1.2GHz CPU and 768MB of RAM, making switching between apps, browsing the web and watching streaming video a breeze. The iPhone 4 is equally powerful, running Apple’s own A4 chipset. It’s slightly lacking in the memory department, housing only 512MB of RAM.

• Software
The iPhone runs of Apple’s incredible iOS platform. It is widely considered to be the smoothest, most easy to use and most stylish operating system there is. And with the imminent arrival of the iOS 5 upgrade, it will be made even better.

The Bold 9900 runs on the much improved version 7.0 of RIM’s Blackberry OS. It has support for HTML 5 and Flash, unlike the iPhone. This latest version of the OS features an attractive liquid graphics interface and a host of new features.

• Camera
Although there are smartphone cameras that pack more megapixels, the iPhone 4’s 5-megapixel camera is capable of producing some of the most beautiful images. It also features an LED flash, 720p video capture and a secondary camera for FaceTime video calling.

The Blackberry Bold 9900 also has a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video camera, but it doesn’t have a secondary camera, making video calling out of the question.

How to maximize your iPhone’s battery life

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Friday Jul 29, 2011

The iPhone has the best battery life I’ve ever seen in a modern smartphone, especially the iPhone 4. I can go almost two whole days under heavy use before I have to plug it into its charger. However, I’ve learned that some of my friends and acquaintances aren’t seeing the same results. If you’d like to squeeze a little more juice out of your iPhone’s battery, follow the tips below!

1. Reduce your screen brightness

Unless you like shining a flashlight on your face, you really don’t need the iPhone’s screen brightness to go over 50%. A very bright screen uses up a lot more energy, so you’ll see some gains in your overall battery life if you were to reduce its brightness to 50% or less. Simply go into Settings then Brightness, and do your best to approximate the halfway point on the brightness slider. If you find yourself move in and out of bright and dark areas, feel free to turn on the auto-dim feature so that your display will adjust itself according to available ambient light.

2. Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Location Services (GPS) when not in use

It seems simple enough, but you’d be surprised how many people leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on when they’re not using either or both. Some users will leave Wi-Fi on, allowing the iPhone to constantly scan nearby networks if that feature isn’t turned off, and that could adversely affect battery life. GPS or location services is a little more tricky since many apps require their use. Luckily, you can toggle which apps can use it, and which apps can live without it. Open up Settings, go into Location Services and select/de-select the apps you wish to grant access to GPS.

There are some cases when Wi-Fi can be beneficial to your battery life. If you’re in an area where your network has low or poor network coverage, using Wi-Fi for web browsing, e-mail and data-intensive apps will actually help your battery life. Otherwise, if you’re in a great coverage area and you aren’t
