Anyone expecting Amazon to release a tablet computer that will compete with the iPad might want to dial back expectations.

A source close to the company tells us that Amazon is launching at least one tablet later this year, but it will be an advanced e-reader with a color screen and some apps — more akin to the Nook Color from Barnes Noble than the iPad.

This matches what a developer told CNET earlier this month: Amazon is set to announce a 7-inch tablet “any day now,” but it will likely have a low-powered chip and no camera.

It’s focused on the Nook Color because that’s where the Kindle is most vulnerable.

Now, this doesn’t mean Amazon won’t develop a full fledged tablet down the road. But for now, it’s going to focus on controlling the e-reader space it has defined for the last three years.

Taking a queue from Shazam’s LyricPlay, music ID service SoundHound has launched a new feature for their iOS app which lets you track a song’s lyrics in real time. Lyrics can be pulled up for songs you’ve identified playing nearby, or anything playing from your personal iTunes library. With LiveLyrics, you’ll be able to jump to any part of the song and have the lyrics tracking keep up. Currently a half-million tracks support the new feature, with the full mil expected to be supported by the end of the year.

SoundHound is a great app for music lovers. Basically, you tap a button, hold up your phone’s mic to music that’s playing in the room, and SoundHound comes back with artist information, track purchasing, sharing to Twitter or Facebook, YouTube videos, and lots of other relevant info. Recently, SoundHound added a feature that lets you simply speak an artist’s name to get results. SoundHound started off as Midomi, and though it followed the trail blazed by Shazam,  adding the ability to hum a song rather than requiring it to be playing.

The new lyrics feature is going live for both free and premium versions of SoundHound apps for iPhone and iPad in Canada and the U.S. Go ahead and get downloading at either of the app links below the video.

iPad vs. Android Tablets: A Kids Perspective

Posted by admin under iPad, iPad News on Wednesday Jul 20, 2011

Ever since the original iPad came out people have loved it. There is online web browsing on a big screen, applications of all different categories, music, movies, games and much more. And after the new iPad 2, more and more people think that the iPad is the best tablet on the market.

That is, for adults.

But what about kids like me? After all, the iPad is not the only tablet out there. The Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy 10.1 and Asus Eee Pad are all new tablets on the market. HP is also out now with a new TouchPad, which uses the WebOS operating system. But which device would kids like?

The Options

The iPad 2, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy 10.1, and HP Touchpad are all great tablets. To be honest I’d be really happy if my parents got me any of these tablets. Any of these tablets will be good for most of the things kids would use a laptop for, except for typing and homework.

Most people use the iPad for browsing the web, doing e-mail, using Facebook and watching movies. Some adults love to play games on the iPad, as well. My mom likes her iPad for web browsing, reading e-mail, and using Facebook because she finds it easy to use, and light.

I currently use an Android phone right now, as well as an Android tablet. Android has more customization features such as home screen widgets and moving backgrounds, and there are a lot of free Android apps, which is great for kids who have limited allowances. Even though the iPad has more apps than Android tablets, it doesn’t make much difference because most good apps such as Angry Birds or Homerun 3D are available on both platforms. Android apps get updated faster than iPad apps, due to Apple’s harder update process. Android devices offer a lot of

ISSH for IPhone and IPad

Posted by admin under iPad News on Wednesday May 4, 2011

Not long ago, my review of a trio of SSH apps for the iPhone and iPad generated some pointed feedback from readers. Their beef? That my article left out an SSH app that they thought was better than the rest. Now I don’t particularly like getting called on the carpet, but I’m glad I did in this case because Zinger-Soft’s $10 iSSH has since become my go-to remote connection app.

As I mentioned in my earlier SSH app review, I manage several remote Linux and Windows servers and it’s occasionally nice to have access to these when I’m not near a computer. While I still rely on LogMeIn Ignition to remote-control the Windows servers, I use SSH to connect to remote terminal sessions on the Linux machines.

When working with a command line interface on an iPhone or iPad, you definitely need to have a crisp clear display. iSSH gives you the ability to customize the screen so that you can dial in just the right combination of screen color, font, and font size on whatever device you’re using.

The keyboard is also an important component, and iSSH’s operates in three modes: hidden, normal and transparent. While in landscape orientation, the command line is usually at the bottom of the screen, so the normal keyboard annoyingly covers it up most of the time. That’s not such a huge deal for me because I prefer to use the transparent keyboard most of the time anyway. I’ve had to adjust the transparency settings a bit because the default setting was a little too light for my taste. The keyboard, which is also highly customizable, provides a ribbon of useful function keys (arrow keys, PgUp, PgDn, and the like). Many of these are also available via a configurable floating palette (the “Pie Menu”) which you can display and move

If you’re one of the many million people who is convinced that text messaging is one smart way to communicate with friends, family and colleagues, then having a utility app that manages all your messages may be useful for you. An app called as the SMS management is an all purpose app that helps users incorporate groups, favorites, GPS location into the iPhone’s messaging capabilities.

One of the great features of Top Utility SMS includes a character counter that counts the number of words when you are composing messages, creation of customer  models, SMS location notification and as well as managing group of multiple contacts. For example sending an SMS message gives you your current GPS location in a response to a created group.

Top Utility SMS manager includes many features but sometimes it may be too complicated as newbie’s will have a hard time navigating through it. One nice idea is to create messaging groups that can easily be contacted and simultaneously manage everything you would want to. While creating groups can be as easy as pointing out to the people who are specifically in a group but after composing a message it gets rather too complicated with users.

Top Utility SMS isn’t as user friendly as it can be. Text messaging should be done in a quick manner as supposed to be quick and easy. The lack of a main menu and choosing a group prior to composing a message makes a hassle of keeping a task. Though some users may find it very valuable but to some it may be invaluable.

When Apple first released the iMovie for the iPhone 4, thousands of users felt the importance of having such a movie editing software on their iOS. Without a doubt, their bringing the iMovie to the larger iPad screen for a more breathtaking experience.

Make Funny Voices with Voicemod

Posted by jwrite under iPhone Accessories, iPhone Apps, iPhone News, iPhones on Thursday Mar 17, 2011

voicemod-200x300

With so many plenty of voice modification apps in the App Store, Voicemod sets the record straight and makes your voice sound just as crazy on the first run. Instead of altering the recording you have made, Voicemod modifies your voice in advance.

The app is simple and easy to use; all you have to do is just plug in the headphones and start filtering and talking. The app is clever enough to block your voice if your headphone volume is tuned sufficiently loud. One of the great aspects it achieves is the fact your voice will really sound like Darth Vader, a futuristic robot or even an idiot.

The idiot effect settings adds a confusing delay that it might sound gibberish and hard to understand. And yes you’ve guessed it right, your voice sounds like a moron after all. While the main attraction would be the real-time voice modification, the app gets an extra feature with the crazy voice that allows users to record and share messages real time. This feature couldn’t be much easier to use than hitting the record button and waiting for a three second countdown to begin. After which users are treated with a share button to share their wacky voices over Twitter, Facebook, or email.

Perhaps, Voicemod is the king of all voice modification app considering the fact it has no major flaws. Adults and kids will surely love with making their voices funny as not every time you talk to your phone and have it talk back to you with an alternative voice.

super-slobber-dog-300x200

The first iPhone app to be pitted out from an independent gaming company goes to Sheep Haus Productions for their creation of Super Slobber Dog. Described as a cartoon mixed with pong and brick game, Super Slobber Dog is a brilliant game combined with both elements into one.

Super Slobber Dog presents an amusing story with familiar game actions that will certainly meet every people’s desire. The story is all about a dog uprooted from his happy home in Germany as a part of an evil scientist experiments. Players will engage in a pong style battle against a cohort of over 10 different dog-nabbers and the rescuer will be a slobbering pooch. Trying to help Slobber Dog find his way home a series of power-ups and “bark matter” will continuously keep players busy as they progress all throughout the game.

The game and cut scene animations are great with fantastic visuals and a loveable storyline in hand. The same issue has also been presented with game’s touch screen versions of pong or break out with finger overlaps when the area is not properly viewed. This simply means controls can be difficult at some times and tougher battles are even won a little bit harder.

Priced at $1.99 at the App Store, in terms of popularity Super Slobber Dog will get a hard time climbing to the top of the rankings. The developers are promising to donate portions of the proceeds from the game to help real dogs find owners to take care of them.
