When iOS 5 finally hits the Internet this fall, it’ll include a number of cool new services from Apple. The biggest, clearly, is iTunes in the Cloud, which takes the entirety of Apple’s iTunes software and turns it into a cloud service. One portion of that – Apple’s cloud music service – is called iTunes Match. Read More

Apple hires JailBreakMe iPhone hacker

Posted by gracelim under Apple News, iPhone News, iPhones on Monday Aug 29, 2011

Apple is constantly at war with “jailbreakers,” or hackers who break down the defenses of the Apple’s iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad and remove the restrictions the company places on them. Jailbreaking allows people to use iPhones on otherwise-unsupported carriers, download non-iTunes App Store apps and support a host of other functions that Apple doesn’t necessarily want iPhone owners doing with its hardware.

To stop jailbreaking, Apple is constantly releasing updates to its iOS software to plug security holes and make jailbreaking impossible. Meanwhile, jailbreakers are always pouring over Apple’s software to find new ways of breaking down Apple’s best defenses. But now it appears that despite their constant conflict, Apple has crossed the battle lines and offered a job – temporary though it may be – to a well-known jailbreaker. Read More

Apple halts 99-cent TV rentals on iTunes

Posted by admin under Apple News, iPhone Apps on Monday Aug 29, 2011

On Friday, Apple removed the option to rent episodes of television shows from iTunes. Previously, rentals had cost iTunes members 99 cents an episode, but an episode could be purchased for $1.99 for standard definition or $2.99 for high definition. The purchase options remain in the store as of Friday. Rentals were first offered to iTunes members when the Apple TV made its first public appearance in September of last year. When an iTunes member made a rental purchase, they had the option of downloading and saving the episode for up to 30 days, but had to finish the episode within 48 hours of starting the program. This was double the amount of time allowed to watch movie rentals which currently stands at 24 hours from starting the film.

Does Apple have any interest in buying Barnes & Noble?

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Thursday Jul 28, 2011

We received a tip from an unproven source claiming to have knowledge of discussions within Apple to possibly purchase Barnes Noble. While this might seem like a strange move at first, it actually makes a whole lot of sense. Apple would be able to take Barnes Noble’s vast digital library of books and publications, and fold them into Apple’s own iBooks store. Apple would have no use for the NOOK, and that would likely be discontinued in this scenario. Apple could then convert some of the brick and mortar Barnes Noble stores into Apple stores and close the rest. It’s out there, and with a price most likely around $1 billion to $1.5 billion, it might be a stretch (though it would barely make a dent in Apple’s giant pile of cash). It also almost makes too much sense for Apple to do this, said another source of ours, mentioning that Apple doesn’t make moves that appear logical to most outside observers at the time. This unproven source also said that iTunes 11 would be released in September along with iOS 5 and iCloud, and will support reading iBooks on computers as well as textbook purchases and rentals.

Top 5 AT&T Smartphones

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Wednesday Jul 27, 2011

ATT customers generally had only one real choice of smartphone the past few years. If you didn’t need a BlackBerry for work, all that was left was the iPhone. It took some time for solid Android devices to hit the carrier – decent Android handsets were finding their way to T-Mobile or Verizon first – so options were limited for ATT customers.

These days, there are a number of high-end devices to choose from and it’s not just the iPhone Show at ATT anymore. There are a few good Android devices to choose from, and even Windows Phone 7 hit the scene with a handful of respectable devices, too. So if you’re in the market for a new smartphone for ATT, take a look at my top 5 picks below.

1. Apple iPhone 4

apple iphone 4 91 e1311701525983 Top 5 ATT SmartphonesIt’s the phone that has allowed ATT to set record sales numbers and activations, and it’s still the phone of choice for the carrier. The iPhone 4 is a great piece of hardware with a very sexy design. It also has the best battery life when it comes to high-end smartphones today, which is a big deal for me and most people I know in the market for a smartphone. Additionally, you’ll have access to the iTunes App Store, where there are hundreds of thousands of quality applications for just about anything you can imagine.

It has a 3.5-inch retina display (960 x 640), Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, a quality 5MP camera and a front-facing camera for self-portraits and video calls. While the design is very nice, with a glass face and glass backing, you might want to consider a case or sleeve for the iPhone 4 – especially if you’re the type who drops cell phones pretty often.

The iPhone 4 is still popular today even though an iPhone 5 is just on the horizon. You can pick one up for $199 or

Google+ For iPhone Now The Top Free App In iTunes

Posted by admin under iPad Apps, iPhone News on Wednesday Jul 20, 2011

The Google+ for iPhone app was released yesterday and it’s already hit the top of list for the most popular free apps in the iTunes App Store. This is fascinating since Google+ is limited to the invite-only beta users currently on the network. That number was announced as 10 million last week during Google’s earnings call, but is now estimated to be at 18 million.

Facebook still holds the title for number one free iOS app downloaded of all time, but it does have a more established network with a staggering 750 million users. Google+, on the other hand, is just three weeks old and has yet to open its doors to the general public. Oddly, the Google+ Android app that’s estimated to have been downloaded as much as 5 million times was not chart topping in the Android Market.

Despite its popularity, the app still needs a lot of work. Some of the key features that puts Google+ ahead of its competitor are missing from the app. This includes the interface for organizing Circles, which ends up being a large list, and perhaps more notably missing is the Hangouts group video chat feature.
