New data shows that usage of Microsoft’s Windows operating system declined so far in August while Apple’s OS X and iOS usage increased, as did usage of Google’s Android OS. Chitika Insights, the research arm of ad network Chitika, published an infographic on Tuesday showing that Windows’ usage share dropped to 78.282% so far in August from 79.049% in July. Mac OS grew from 8.895% in July to 9.551% in August, iOS grew marginally from 5.278% to 5.491% and Android grew from 3.135% to 3.245% in August. During the month in which Linux celebrated its 20th anniversary, usage dropped from 2.365% to 2.191%. Of note, Net Applications showed significantly different OS market share data in July compared to Chitika, with Windows holding 87.6% of the market, Mac owning 5.61%, iOS owning 3% and Android claiming 0.81% of the global OS market. Chitika’s full infographic follows below.

HTC Prime and Ignite Windows Phones leaked by retailer

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Friday Jul 29, 2011

We haven’t seen the HTC Ignite or Prime since March, but a new leak from cell phone retailer The Phone House suggests that HTC is planning to launch both handsets in the near future. The phones will pack Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, presumably the Mango release, but it is unclear when they will hit the market. If we were betting men we would wager that both handsets will launch in the early fall, when Microsoft has said it will deploy Mango to existing handsets. Earlier this week, the Redmond-based company announced that it has already released the operating system update to manufacturers, so we’re expecting to see a number of new Windows Phone leaks to start cropping up.

Thanks, Andrew

Planit from Pushbutton bought by Amazon

Anyone expecting Amazon to release a tablet computer that will compete with the iPad might want to dial back expectations.

A source close to the company tells us that Amazon is launching at least one tablet later this year, but it will be an advanced e-reader with a color screen and some apps — more akin to the Nook Color from Barnes Noble than the iPad.

This matches what a developer told CNET earlier this month: Amazon is set to announce a 7-inch tablet “any day now,” but it will likely have a low-powered chip and no camera.

It’s focused on the Nook Color because that’s where the Kindle is most vulnerable.

Now, this doesn’t mean Amazon won’t develop a full fledged tablet down the road. But for now, it’s going to focus on controlling the e-reader space it has defined for the last three years.

Windows Phone ‘Mango’ released to vendors

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Wednesday Jul 27, 2011

Microsoft confirmed on its Windows Team Blog on Monday that it has released the RTM build of Windows Phone “Mango” to manufacturing partners. “This marks the point in the development process where we hand code to our handset and mobile operator partners to optimize Mango for their specific phone and network configurations,” explained Microsoft’s Windows Phone corporate vice president Terry Myerson. Microsoft has said Mango will deliver more than 500 new features to the Windows Phone platform, including Internet Explorer 9 and deeper social network integration, and we expect to see the release hit current devices in August. In addition, new phones from Microsoft’s partners, which include Nokia, HTC, LG, Samsung, Dell, Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE, are expected to be unveiled as early as September.

Wozniak: Paul Allen should be investing, not patent trolling

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Wednesday May 4, 2011

During his Embedded System Conference Silicon Valley keynote recently, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak took some time to rag on Paul Allen’s decision to sue Apple, Google, and other companies over patent infringement. “Paul Allen should be out there investing in companies that are doing something, making products, actually making a new future for the world, and not ‘I’m going to sue people, and get in bed with the lawyers to make my money.’ That’s not the right way,” Wozniak said, according to The Register. Wozniak referred to Allen’s strategy as a “patent-troll thing,” and said “any fifth grader could come up with the same approach.” Woz also said he was so perturbed by the Allen’s lawsuit binge — and the big company strategy of paying engineers to file for patents long before the tech is actually available – that he decided to bail on the Microsoft co-founder’s speech at the Computer History Museum to instead indulge in some Marie Callender’s pea soup with friends.

Microsoft provides migration tool for iOS developers

Posted by admin under iPhone News on Wednesday May 4, 2011

Microsoft is aiming to assuage the pains of mobile application developers looking to migrate their iOS applications from Apple’s mobile operating system to Windows Phone. “Launched today, the iPhone/iOS to Windows Phone 7 API mapping tool helps developers find their way around when they discover the Windows Phone platform,” writes Microsoft in a blog post. “Think of the API mapping tool as being like a translation dictionary.” The tool will allow iOS developers to easily find the equivalent API calls, classes, methods, and notification events  in C#, as well as download working bits of sample code. “Don’t expect a mapping for all of the APIs, simply because the platforms are built upon different architectures and user interfaces,” the post continues. “For this first round we focused on identifying the one-to-one mapping when it exists. In the following versions we’ll expand the scope and anytime the concepts are similar enough, we’ll do our best to provide the appropriate guidance.” Microsoft’s tool can be found here.

When receiving email messages with attachments (Word, Excel, or PDF files) represented by the paperclip icon, the attachment may not be displayed when the message is opened. Instead, a plain text version of the message is received and contains an attachment named Winmail.dat that cannot be viewed or opened.

Resolution

This happens when the email message is composed in RTF (Rich Text Format) with attachments. To display the attachment properly on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, have the sender compose the email message in either plain text or HTML.
